Asian Games 2026 Begins With Comfortable India Victory

India began their Asian Games 2026 gold-medal defence in emphatic fashion, defeating hosts Japan by eight wickets in the women鈥檚 cricket quarterfinal at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Friday.

After winning the toss, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur opted to field. The decision paid off as India鈥檚 bowlers kept Japan under pressure throughout the innings and eventually dismissed the hosts for just 57 runs in 19.5 overs. India then needed only five overs to reach 59 for two and seal their place in the semifinals.

Asian Games 2026: Shree Charani Leads India鈥檚 Bowling Attack

Left-arm spinner Shree Charani was the standout performer with the ball. She finished with outstanding figures of 4/10, including two maidens, as Japan struggled to build partnerships.

Charani’s spell became particularly damaging when she removed two Japanese batters in successive deliveries. Her performance also became the best bowling figures by an Indian in Asian Games women’s cricket history.

Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma also contributed with the ball as India steadily dismantled Japan’s batting order.

Japan’s innings never gained momentum after the opening partnership. The hosts eventually managed only 57, leaving India with a modest target of 58.

Asian Games 2026: Shafali Verma Finishes the Chase

India’s chase was brief but did not begin completely without trouble.

Japan claimed the wickets of Kamalini Gunalan and Bharti Fulmali, giving the hosts a moment of hope. However, Shafali Verma quickly took control of the chase.

The explosive opener remained unbeaten on 40 from just 15 deliveries, striking the ball cleanly as India reached 59/2 in only five overs. Her aggressive innings ensured that Japan could not build any further pressure.

India’s rapid chase also underlined the difference in experience between the two sides. Japan were making their third appearance in women’s cricket at the Asian Games, while India entered the competition as defending champions and fresh from winning their eighth Women’s Asia Cup title.

Asian Games 2026: India Set Up Bangladesh Semifinal

The victory sends India into the semifinal, where they will face Bangladesh.

The other semifinal will feature Pakistan and Sri Lanka, setting up two contests that will determine the finalists for the women’s cricket gold medal.

India will now look to carry the momentum from their dominant opening performance into the next stage. The team arrived in Japan after a successful Asia Cup campaign and has begun its Asian Games title defence with a convincing result.

For Japan, the defeat brings their campaign to an end, but their appearance against one of the world’s leading women’s cricket teams provides another significant step in the country’s development of the sport.

The semifinal against Bangladesh will present India with a different challenge. With the knockout stage leaving little room for error, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side will now be one victory away from reaching the Asian Games final and moving closer to another gold-medal opportunity.
