WPL 2026 Kicks Off With Blockbuster MI vs RCB Clash in Navi Mumbai

Defending champions Mumbai Indians face a revamped Royal Challengers Bengaluru as the Women’s Premier League returns for its fourth season
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 gets underway on January 9 with a high-octane opener at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, as defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) take on former winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The marquee clash sets the tone for a season expected to be the most competitive yet in the league’s short but impactful history.

The opening leg of the tournament will be played in Navi Mumbai, before the action shifts to Vadodara for the second leg, which will host the playoffs and knockout matches.

The other teams in the league are Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants.

A Rivalry That Has Come to Define the League

MI versus RCB has grown into one of the WPL’s most anticipated rivalries. Mumbai enter the contest with a narrow 4–3 advantage in head-to-head meetings, but opening-night pressure often renders past records irrelevant. With both teams eyeing early momentum, the curtain-raiser carries added significance.

Mumbai Indians Target Back-to-Back Titles

Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai Indians begin their title defence with a settled squad and the confidence of champions. Continuity remains their biggest strength.
All-rounders Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt continue to form the backbone of MI’s lineup, offering power, control, and match-winning ability. The return of pace ace Shabnim Ismail adds serious bite to the bowling attack, while the inclusion of Amelia Kerr from the mega auction further reinforces a middle order already known for its depth and resilience.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Enter a New Era

RCB, under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, arrive with a refreshed look following a major squad overhaul. The franchise has placed its faith in a younger, more dynamic core as it looks to challenge for another title.

The absence of Ellyse Perry leaves a notable gap, but Richa Ghosh is expected to shoulder greater responsibility as a finisher. She will be supported by the explosive Grace Harris and emerging talent Georgia Voll, while the addition of Pooja Vastrakar lends pace, balance, and Indian firepower to the bowling unit.

Players Who Could Shape the Opener

Harmanpreet Kaur (MI): A big-match performer who thrives on opening-night pressure.
Smriti Mandhana (RCB): In fine international form, she will be keen to dictate terms at the top.
Shreyanka Patil (RCB): Her off-spin, especially in the powerplay, could be key against MI’s powerful batting order.

A Familiar Ground, Special Memories

It will be a sweet homecoming for several Indian stars at the DY Patil Stadium. The venue holds special significance, having hosted India’s ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 triumph under Harmanpreet Kaur in November. Members of that historic title-winning XI — Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav and Richa Ghosh — return to familiar surroundings, adding an emotional layer to the season opener.

As dusk settles over Navi Mumbai, the stadium is set to glow in blue and red. With the road to the Vadodara knockouts beginning here, the message is unmistakable — the WPL is back, and the stakes are higher than ever.
