From Heartbreak to Dynasty: Kohli Leads RCB into a New Golden Era with Back-to-Back IPL Titles

For years, Royal Challengers Bengaluru carried the tag of being one of the Indian Premier League’s most passionate yet unfulfilled franchises. Despite boasting some of cricket’s biggest names, the coveted trophy remained out of reach, leaving generations of fans with memories of heartbreak rather than celebration.

That narrative has now been completely rewritten.

RCB defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final to lift their second consecutive title, confirming that last year’s triumph was no fairytale. It was the beginning of a new era.

At the centre of the historic victory stood Virat Kohli, the one constant through RCB’s highs and lows. The former captain produced an unbeaten 75 off just 42 balls and registered the fastest fifty of his IPL career, reaching the milestone in only 25 deliveries. It was a knock that combined experience, composure and hunger—qualities that have defined Kohli’s long association with the franchise.

The chase of 156 never looked beyond RCB after Kohli settled in. Alongside Venkatesh Iyer, who contributed 32 runs, he laid the foundation before steering the team home with two overs to spare.

Earlier, RCB’s bowlers had delivered when it mattered most. Rasikh Salam claimed 3/27, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood picked up two wickets each to restrict Gujarat Titans to 155/8. Washington Sundar’s unbeaten fifty was the lone bright spot for the opposition.

But this final was about more than numbers.

It was about a franchise that spent nearly two decades chasing validation. It was about supporters who stayed loyal through years of disappointment. Most importantly, it was about Virat Kohli, whose journey has mirrored RCB’s own story—from unfulfilled promise to sustained success.

The 2025 title ended the wait. The 2026 title established a legacy.

Once known as the team that could not cross the final hurdle, RCB are now champions again, proving that perseverance can eventually turn pain into glory.

Brief Scores

  • Gujarat Titans: 155/8 (20 overs)
  • Washington Sundar 50*; Rasikh Salam 3/27
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 161/5 (18 overs)
  • Virat Kohli 75* (42), Venkatesh Iyer 32
  • Result: RCB won by 5 wickets

Key Records

  • RCB won their second consecutive IPL title.
  • Virat Kohli scored the fastest IPL fifty of his career (25 balls).
  • Kohli remained unbeaten on 75 in the final.

RCB became one of the few franchises to win back-to-back IPL championships.
