Barcelona Set the Pace in 2026 with Derby Triumph, Open Seven-Point La Liga Gap

Barcelona began 2026 in emphatic fashion, strengthening their grip on the La Liga title race with a 2–0 victory over city rivals Espanyol in a tense Catalan derby at the RCDE Stadium. The win lifts the Blaugrana seven points clear at the top, underlining their authority as the season enters a decisive phase.

In a fiercely contested derby, chances were scarce and tempers high for much of the evening. The spotlight fell on Joan Garcia, the Barcelona goalkeeper making a return to his former club amid a hostile atmosphere. Garcia delivered a commanding display, producing six crucial saves, including a sharp stop from Pere Milla, to keep the contest finely balanced through 85 minutes.

Espanyol defended resolutely and threatened on the counter, but Barcelona’s patience and composure eventually told in the closing stages.

Late Surge Seals the Points

With the stalemate looming, Barcelona found another gear. In the 86th minute, substitute Fermín López surged through midfield before laying the ball off to Dani Olmo, who curled a sublime finish into the top corner to break the deadlock.

Just four minutes later, López struck again—this time as provider—setting up Robert Lewandowski to clinically double the advantage and seal the result. The victory marked Barcelona’s ninth consecutive league win, further reinforcing their status as the side to beat.

Villarreal Flex Title Credentials at Elche

Earlier on Saturday, Villarreal sent a strong message of their own with a 3–1 away win against Elche at the Martínez Valero Stadium.
The visitors stormed into control early, with Alberto Moleiro and Georges Mikautadze scoring within the opening 13 minutes. Although Martim Neto pulled one back for Elche to briefly raise hopes, Alfonso Pedraza settled the contest late on.

The result lifts Villarreal provisionally into third place on 38 points, and with a game in hand over Barcelona, the Yellow Submarine remain the most credible challengers outside the traditional title favourites.

Sunday Showdowns Loom Large

Attention now turns to Sunday, where the chasing pack will attempt to respond to Barcelona’s early statement:

Real Madrid vs Real Betis: Xabi Alonso’s side must win at the Bernabéu to reduce the gap to four points. However, they face the challenge without injured star Kylian Mbappé against a Betis team still unbeaten away from home this season.
Real Sociedad vs Atletico Madrid: Diego Simeone’s Atletico travel to San Sebastián aiming to leapfrog Villarreal and reclaim third place. Real Sociedad, hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone, will be desperate to spring a surprise.

Laliga Current Standings (Top 5)
1st: FC Barcelona – 49 points
2nd: Real Madrid – 42 points
3rd: Villarreal – 38 points
4th: Atletico Madrid – 37 points
5th: Espanyol – 33 points
