Salah’s Late Strike Sends Egypt Off to Winning AFCON Start

Egypt began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over Zimbabwe in a Group B clash held at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir, Morocco, securing three vital points to open their tournament.

The seven-time African champions were tested early as Zimbabwe took a surprise first-half lead, capitalising on a rare lapse in Egypt’s defence. Despite controlling possession and territory, Egypt struggled to break down a disciplined Zimbabwe side and went into the break trailing.

The pressure told after halftime when Egypt increased the tempo, with Omar Marmoush scoring the equaliser to bring the favourites back into the contest and set up a tense finish.

With the match heading towards a draw, Mohamed Salah delivered the decisive moment deep into stoppage time, striking the winner to complete the comeback. The goal carried added significance for the Egypt captain, who has been coming off a turbulent spell at Liverpool, where he was benched in recent matches and reportedly had a fallout with head coach Arne Slot.

Salah’s late heroics not only sealed a crucial win for Egypt but also served as a timely boost on the international stage. The victory strengthens Egypt’s position in the group and fuels their push for a record-extending eighth AFCON title, while Zimbabwe will look to regroup after a spirited but ultimately painful defeat.
