Venkatesh Prasad Begins a New Innings to Reclaim Karnataka Cricket’s Glory

For years, he was the master of late seam, the executioner with the slower ball, and the man forever immortalized for sending Aamir Sohail back in the 1996 World Cup. Today, Bapu Krishnarao Venkatesh Prasad has rechanneled that same fire and precision into a different battleground—the boardroom of Karnataka cricket.

The former India pacer has scripted a resounding comeback as the new President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), leading his slate ‘Team Game Changers’ to a sweeping victory in the recently concluded elections. Clinching four of the five major office-bearer posts, the verdict stands as an unmistakable demand from members: restore transparency, restore pride, and put cricket back at the heart of the KSCA.

The Pacer’s Legacy: A Career Built on Skill and Steel

Prasad’s cricketing journey was defined by discipline, strategic brilliance, and an unshakeable temperament. In tandem with his long-time bowling partner Javagal Srinath, he formed one of India’s most respected fast-bowling duos of the 90s. Known for his mastery of seam and swing, he was feared for his subtle movement even on unhelpful surfaces, and his disguised slow leg-cutter became a signature weapon across formats.

His career delivered unforgettable moments, notably the extraordinary burst of five wickets for zero runs against Pakistan during his six-wicket haul in the unforgettable Chennai Test of 1999. By the time he retired, he had secured 96 wickets from 33 Tests and 196 wickets from 161 ODIs, achievements that carved his name among India’s finest fast-bowling craftsmen.

Following retirement in 2005, Prasad immersed himself in shaping India’s cricketing future—coaching the India Under-19 team and later serving as India’s senior bowling coach from 2007 to 2009. His earlier stint as KSCA Vice-President (2010–13) alongside Anil Kumble and Srinath prepared him for the administrative challenge he now embraces.

The Mission Ahead: Rebuilding Trust, Infrastructure & Identity

Prasad has stepped into office at a critical moment for Karnataka cricket. Supporting him in leadership are former India batter Sujith Somasunder as Vice-President and seasoned administrator Santosh Menon as Secretary, forming a collective that has promised structural reform and professional governance.

Restoring Chinnaswamy’s Pride

The most pressing challenge is the revival of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which lost the right to host marquee international and IPL fixtures in the aftermath of the tragic stampede of June 2025. The stadium’s absence from major events has deeply affected Bengaluru’s sporting identity, and Prasad has vowed to rebuild both infrastructure and public trust.

“This victory belongs to everyone who wanted change—everyone who wants international cricket back at Chinnaswamy. This is about the pride of Bengaluru and Karnataka.”
— Venkatesh Prasad, KSCA President

He has instructed his administration to implement upgraded crowd-management measures and adopt the findings of the judicial commission investigating the incident, promising uncompromising safety standards.

Ending ‘Backseat Driving’

Throughout his campaign, Prasad rallied support by promising to restore integrity to cricket administration and eliminate external interference. With public backing from stellar figures like Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath, his leadership seeks to build a transparent, accountable system that prioritizes player development and grassroots structure over political maneuvering.

A Historic Step Forward

In a milestone moment, former India player Kalpana Venkatachar has been elected to the managing committee, becoming the first woman office-bearer in KSCA’s history. Her election signals a renewed commitment to inclusion, representation, and the development of both men’s and women’s cricket pathways.

A New Dawn for Karnataka Cricket

For a bowler who built his reputation on clarity under pressure and bold tactical execution, the phase ahead is both daunting and defining. Venkatesh Prasad now stands at the start of a transformative innings—not with the ball in hand, but with a mandate to restore infrastructure, rebuild trust, and return Karnataka to the top tier of Indian cricket development.

If his past is any indication, this new spell may prove just as impactful as his finest moments on the field.
