At just 21 years old, Indian cricket’s explosive opener Shafali Verma stood in the spotlight after being named Player of the Match in the 2025 Women’s World Cup final — yet her path to this moment was far from straightforward. “The last one year was very tough for me. I faced a lot of struggles, but I kept working extremely hard and was rewarded by God for my effort,” Shafali said in a recent interview.

Called up at the last minute – and delivered
Shafali wasn’t even in India’s initial playing XI for the knockout stages. She was drafted in as a replacement for injured teammate Pratika Rawal. In the final against South Africa, she hit a blistering 87 with the bat and picked up 2 wickets for 36 runs, helping India clinch its maiden 50-over World Cup title. The gamble paid off.

Working on the foundation of success
Behind the fireworks on the world stage lies a player who embraced the grind. Earlier in 2025, she admitted that one-day cricket still posed challenges, saying one-dayers remain an unsolved puzzle for her. In a past interview, Shafali opened up about being dropped from the team and hiding the news from her father as he recovered from a heart attack — then dedicating herself to improving fitness, technique and mental strength.

A message for young dreamers
After the World Cup triumph, Shafali urged girls to believe in themselves and put in the hard work. “They should always put in the hard work in whatever field they may choose and also have self-belief, and results will follow,” she told reporters. She also spoke warmly of her family’s support — especially her father, who returned to training sessions early despite his health scare to help her get back on track.

More than a hundred? Less important than the trophy
Reflecting on her 87-run knock, Shafali said she had no regrets about missing a century. The trophy mattered most. “The only thought was that we have to give it all in those seven hours for our country,” she said.

What’s next?
With the World Cup now in the cabinet, Shafali turns her gaze to cementing her place as India’s go-to opener across formats. Her journey reminds that talent shines brightest when backed by perseverance, humility and support.
