Vinicius Jr’s reaction after being substituted against Barcelona has reignited questions about his relationship with Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso. While it was not an act of rebellion, it reflected growing tension between the pair — tension that will require careful management to prevent escalation.
Shift from freedom to structure
Under former manager Carlo Ancelotti, Vinicius had complete freedom to express himself and often served as the creative core of Real Madrid’s attack. Under Xabi Alonso, he operates in a more disciplined, structured system — one the new coach believes is essential for consistency.
The Brazilian feels that his influence has diminished, that he is no longer “untouchable.” Alonso, however, is determined to maintain authority, having already shown his willingness to bench big names. Their rift reportedly began before the Club World Cup semi-final against PSG, when Vinicius was dropped to the bench and reacted angrily.
Tense relationship and changing priorities
The relationship has since cooled. Vinicius did not mention Alonso in his public apology after El Clasico, and insiders say the two maintain only a professional distance. The Real Madrid hierarchy still values the 24-year-old but the club’s project has shifted its focus towards Kylian Mbappe, leaving Vinicius feeling sidelined.
Although Madrid want to extend his contract until 2030, the player has paused negotiations, believing he has not been adequately supported amid media criticism and refereeing controversies.
A fragile truce
For now, both sides are trying to move forward. Alonso values Vinicius’ flair and work rate, while the player knows further confrontation could harm his image. His apology brought a temporary truce, but the underlying issues remain. Another benching could reignite tension — yet if trust is rebuilt, Real Madrid’s storm may soon pass.
