Napoli’s 3–1 victory over Inter Milan on Saturday was overshadowed by an explosive touchline spat between Napoli boss Antonio Conte and Inter captain Lautaro Martínez, as tempers flared during a high-octane Serie A encounter at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
The defending champions delivered a commanding performance to reclaim top spot in the league, edging one point ahead of AC Milan. Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Scott McTominay, and Frank Anguissa sealed a crucial win for Conte’s side, while Hakan Çalhanoğlu pulled one back for Inter from the penalty spot.
De Bruyne opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, calmly converting from the spot for his fourth league goal of the season, though the Belgian star was later forced off with a knock sustained during the kick. McTominay, last season’s Serie A Player of the Year, doubled the lead just before half-time, ending a five-match league goal drought. Anguissa’s powerful strike in the 66th minute restored Napoli’s two-goal cushion after Çalhanoğlu’s penalty briefly threatened a comeback.
The night’s biggest talking point, however, came around the hour mark when Conte and Martínez were seen exchanging heated words on the touchline. The altercation began after a foul sparked a scuffle between players, quickly drawing in both benches. Cameras captured Martínez gesturing toward Conte and appearing to shout, “You are sh****** yourself,” while the Napoli coach, visibly enraged, allegedly responded with a crude retort. Officials and players had to intervene to calm both camps before play resumed.
The feud reignited memories of the pair’s stormy relationship at Inter during the 2020–21 season, when Conte famously confronted Martínez after substituting him mid-match — an incident that Inter’s players later mocked by making the duo “box it out” in training wearing gloves.
Despite the sideline fireworks, Conte’s Napoli continue to look like the team to beat this season, blending intensity with precision under their fiery manager. Inter, meanwhile, were left frustrated as their brief revival was undone by defensive lapses and off-field distractions.
