England’s former skipper Heather Knight marked her 300th international appearance with a masterful century, scoring 109 off just 91 balls. Her innings, laced with 15 boundaries and a six, was the backbone of England’s total of 288 for eight.

Amy Jones (56) and Tammy Beaumont (22) provided a solid start with a 73-run partnership, while Deepti Sharma stood out for India with a disciplined spell of 4 for 51.

India’s Chase Falters At The Finish Line

Chasing 289, India began cautiously after losing early wickets, but Mandhana (88 off 84) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (70 off 70) steadied the innings with a commanding 125-run stand.
Deepti Sharma’s late cameo of 50 kept India in the hunt, but tight bowling from England’s Linsey Smith in the final over sealed the result. With 14 runs needed from the last six balls, Smith held her nerve to concede just five runs and clinch victory for her side.

Semi-Final Hopes Hang By A Thread

This loss marks India’s third consecutive defeat in the tournament, leaving them in a must-win situation. England, meanwhile, have confirmed their place in the semi-finals, joining Australia and South Africa.
India must now defeat New Zealand in their final group-stage match at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on October 23 to stand any chance of advancing to the knockout stage.

Turning Points Of The Match

Heather Knight’s century that anchored England’s innings.

Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance with both bat and ball.

The Mandhana-Harmanpreet partnership that reignited India’s hopes.

Linsey Smith’s composed final over that sealed the thriller.

The Road Ahead

Speaking after the match, captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed disappointment but remained optimistic. “We fought till the end. A few moments didn’t go our way, but we still believe in our team’s ability to bounce back,” she said.

India will need to regroup quickly and deliver a flawless performance against New Zealand to keep their World Cup dream alive.
