Scotland Struggle Despite Narrow Win Over Belarus

Scotland managed to secure a crucial 2-1 win against Belarus in the World Cup qualifiers at Hampden Park, but their performance left much to be desired. Despite taking three important points, Steve Clarke’s side looked far from convincing and were fortunate to escape with victory.

A Win Without Conviction
Che Adams gave Scotland an early lead, raising hopes of a comfortable evening. However, instead of building on that advantage, the team lost control of the match. Their play was disjointed, passes went astray, and the energy that usually defines Clarke’s side was missing. Belarus, who had conceded 17 goals in their last four games, found gaps with ease and looked threatening on the counter.

In the final stages, Scott McTominay doubled the lead with a fine strike, but the goal did little to hide Scotland’s weaknesses. Moments later, Belarus pulled one back through Hleb Kuchko, and the closing minutes turned into a nervous struggle for the hosts. The visitors finished with more attempts on goal and might have earned a draw on another day.

Players Out of Rhythm
Several of Scotland’s key players appeared below their best. Captain Andy Robertson lacked his usual drive, John McGinn struggled for impact, and even McTominay, despite scoring, looked off the pace. The midfield combination of Kenny McLean and Billy Gilmour failed to control proceedings, leaving the defence exposed.

Concerns Ahead of Decisive Fixtures
With two games remaining—away to Greece and at home against Denmark—Scotland remain in a promising position in Group C. But their recent performances have raised doubts about their readiness for the final push.

Clarke admitted his disappointment, calling the display “a head-scratcher.” The coach, now Scotland’s longest-serving manager, said his team “must rediscover their best form” to ensure qualification.

For now, the win keeps Scotland’s World Cup hopes alive—but only just. Unless they rediscover their rhythm and composure, the dream could easily fade in the crucial weeks ahead.
