Historic Medal Haul by Indian Para-Athletes at World Championships, Says PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded India’s para-athletes for delivering the nation’s best-ever campaign at the World Para Athletics Championships, calling their achievement “historic” and saying it will inspire countless people.

India Shines with Best-Ever Medal Tally

India finished 10th overall, securing a record 22 medals—6 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze—its highest haul at the World Championships. Sunday alone saw three silver medals from Simran Sharma (women’s 100m T12), Preethi Pal (women’s 100m T35), and Navdeep (men’s javelin throw T41), along with a bronze from Sandeep in the men’s 200m T44.

PM Modi congratulated the athletes, saying: “A historic performance by our para-athletes! I am proud of each and every member of our contingent. Their success will inspire several people.”

India Surpasses Previous Records

India outdid its Kobe 2024 campaign, where it won 17 medals (6 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze). The 73-member contingent, including 54 men and 19 women, demonstrated skill, determination, and resilience on the international stage.

A Global Spectacle in Delhi

The 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships featured 2,000 athletes from 104 nations, competing in 186 events at the newly laid Mondo track in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Over nine days, athletes shattered 35 world records—matching Paris 2023—and set 104 championship records, surpassing Kobe 2024 by 14 world records.

A total of 44 nations won at least one gold medal, and 63 countries returned home with medals, making the competition fiercely competitive and globally significant.

PM Modi on Hosting the Event

Highlighting India’s role as host, PM Modi added:
“Hosting the tournament in Delhi has been an honour for India. Gratitude to athletes and support staff from almost 100 nations who were part of the tournament.”
