Hangzhou, China – September 6, 2025: In a nail-biting clash at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Hockey Field, the Indian women’s hockey team once again displayed their fighting spirit, salvaging a dramatic 2-2 draw against defending champions Japan in their second pool B match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2025.
Japan took an early lead through Hiroka Murayama’s strike in the 10th minute, setting the stage for a tough encounter. India responded with determination as Rutaja Dadaso Pisal netted an equaliser in the 30th minute, bringing parity to the match at halftime.
The second half saw high-intensity hockey with Japan regaining the lead in the 58th minute via Chiko Fujibayashi. But India, undeterred by the pressure and missing key veterans like goalkeeper Savita Punia and drag-flick specialist Deepika due to injuries, kept their nerves steady. With the clock ticking down, Navneet Kaur emerged as the hero, expertly converting a penalty corner in the dying seconds to level the match and secure a crucial point for India.
Captain Salima Tete’s leadership from the front, combined with goalkeeper Bichu Devi’s crucial saves and the midfield control maintained by Vaishnavi Phalke and Navneet Kaur herself, highlighted India’s resilience and tactical grip. This spirited comeback ensured India remained unbeaten in their group stage after a dominating 11-0 win over Thailand in their opener.
Both teams now lead Pool B and are strong contenders to advance to the Super 4s stage, where the tournament will intensify ahead of the finals. The winner of the Asia Cup will earn a coveted place in the 2026 Women’s World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.
With high stakes and fierce competition, India’s next match against Singapore on September 8 will be key to solidifying their position in the tournament.
