New Delhi: India has unveiled a two-pronged strategy on the global stage—countering U.S. President Donald Trump’s steep tariff measures while simultaneously putting forward its ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
India Counters 50% U.S. Tariffs
Following Washington’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on a range of Indian exports, New Delhi has announced a broad strategy to expand its presence in 40 key international markets. The government is prioritizing textile exports as a primary driver, seeking to reduce dependency on the U.S. and strengthen trade ties with countries such as the UK, Japan, and South Korea.
Officials said Export Promotion Councils will play a pivotal role in securing new orders, while existing Free Trade Agreements will be leveraged to cushion the impact of American trade barriers. The move is seen as India’s first major countermeasure to safeguard its exporters from escalating trade frictions with the U.S.
Cabinet Approves Commonwealth Games Bid
In another significant development, the Union Cabinet approved India’s submission of a formal bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Ahmedabad has been identified as the proposed venue, backed by the central government’s assurance of financial and infrastructural support to the Gujarat government.
The proposal also involves signing a Host Collaboration Agreement, aligning with global sporting standards and ensuring smooth preparations if the bid succeeds. Officials said hosting the Games would boost India’s global sporting profile and accelerate urban development in Ahmedabad.
