Olympic medallists PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu have been elected unopposed to the Athletes’ Commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). A total of 10 sportspersons, including five men and five women, were declared elected unopposed in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The decision came after former track and field athlete Sudha Singh withdrew her candidature late Monday night. With ace badminton player Kidambi Srikanth having also withdrawn earlier, the number of candidates was reduced to 10 against 10 available positions, eliminating the need for an election.

Ten Sportspersons Join IOA Athletes’ Commission

Returning Officer Sanjay K. Srivastava formally declared all 10 candidates elected unopposed.

The elected members include PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, hockey players Harmanpreet Singh and Salima Tete, shooter Swapnil Kusale, fencer Bhavani Devi, shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor, archer Bombayla Devi, swimmer Sajan Prakash and Manjeet Singh.

Key Roles in IOA Executive Council

The newly elected commission members will subsequently choose a chairperson and vice-chairperson, with one male and one female representative for each position.

The chairperson and vice-chairperson will become members of the IOA Executive Council. Additionally, two commission members, one male and one female, will be nominated to the IOA General Body with voting rights.

These two representatives will also participate in the IOA Executive Council elections scheduled for December 5.

The elections for the commission’s leadership positions and its two representatives to the IOA General Body will be held separately.
