Day 5 Brings Goals, Grit and Momentum at Junior Men’s Hockey Nationals

The 16th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2026 continued to gather momentum on Day 5, with several teams strengthening their push for the knockout rounds through commanding performances at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The day’s action featured high-scoring encounters, closely fought battles and dominant displays, highlighting the depth of young hockey talent emerging from across the country.

With every match becoming increasingly significant, teams approached the day knowing that three points could prove decisive in the race for qualification. From clinical attacking hockey to disciplined defensive displays, Day 5 had a little bit of everything.

Punjab Produce the Statement Win of the Day

If one team truly stamped its authority on the competition, it was Hockey Punjab.

Punjab delivered one of the most convincing performances of the tournament by defeating Delhi Hockey 6-2 in a one-sided Division A clash. Right from the opening quarter, Punjab dictated the tempo with quick passing, aggressive pressing and efficient finishing inside the circle.

Despite Delhi finding the net twice, Punjab never looked under pressure. Their relentless attacking approach resulted in six goals, making it one of the highest-scoring victories of the championship so far. The win also significantly boosts Punjab’s confidence as the competition enters a crucial stage.

Uttar Pradesh Wins the Battle of Fine Margins

One of the day’s most competitive contests saw Uttar Pradesh Hockey overcome Hockey Bengal 2-1.

Unlike the Punjab match, this encounter remained evenly balanced for long periods, with both teams creating chances and defending resolutely. Uttar Pradesh eventually made the difference by capitalising on key opportunities and protecting their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The victory earned Uttar Pradesh three valuable points and kept them firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.

Odisha Continues Its Winning Momentum

The Hockey Association of Odisha also enjoyed a productive outing, defeating Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Hockey 4-2.

Odisha displayed impressive attacking combinations while maintaining composure during crucial moments of the match. Although their opponents showed resilience by scoring twice, Odisha remained in control for most of the contest and ensured they walked away with a deserved victory.

The result further strengthens Odisha’s campaign and underlines why they remain one of the strong contenders in the tournament.

Division B Witnesses Commanding Displays

The excitement wasn’t limited to Division A.

In Division B, Hockey Uttarakhand produced a disciplined all-round performance to defeat Hockey Jammu & Kashmir 4-0. Uttarakhand controlled possession throughout the game, converted their scoring opportunities effectively and maintained a clean sheet to register one of the most complete performances of the day.

Meanwhile, Hockey Chandigarh defeated Hockey Arunachal 4-2 in another entertaining contest. Chandigarh’s attacking quality proved decisive as they consistently found spaces in the opposition defence despite Arunachal putting up a spirited fight.

Punjab’s emphatic win has made a strong statement, while Uttar Pradesh and Odisha have continued their consistent performances. In Division B, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh have also emerged as teams capable of challenging for top honours.

With several league matches still remaining, the battle for qualification is expected to become even more competitive over the coming days.

What Makes This Tournament Important?

The Hockey India Junior Men National Championship serves as one of the country’s premier domestic competitions for emerging players. The tournament offers young athletes an opportunity to showcase their abilities against the best junior talent from different states and union territories.

Strong performances here often attract the attention of national selectors, making every match a significant platform for future Indian hockey stars.
