Pakistan Pulls Out of Asian Champions Trophy 2026: India’s Rivalry Fixture Disappears

The Asian Champions Trophy 2026 has lost one of its most anticipated potential match-ups after Pakistan withdrew from the tournament in India, with Bangladesh stepping in as its replacement. The decision follows the rejection of Pakistan’s request to move the competition or its matches to a neutral venue. The tournament will run from October 27 to November 5 in Punjab, but the withdrawal has changed the fixture list and removed the possibility of an India-Pakistan meeting in the competition. For India, the focus now shifts to defending its title against five other Asian sides on home soil.

Pakistan’s Neutral-Venue Request Ends in Withdrawal

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had approached the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), asking either for the entire tournament to be moved or for Pakistan’s matches to be staged at a neutral venue. PHF interim president Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani cited the sensitive bilateral situation between India and Pakistan and concerns about the safety and dignity of players and officials.

Wani also stressed that Pakistan remained committed to competing internationally. In his statement, he said: “We are ready to take on India as well as all FIH member nations on the field.” He added that the federation wanted sport to remain free from politics.

However, Hockey India maintained that the tournament would take place at its designated Indian venues. Its secretary general, Bhola Nath Singh, who is also an AHF vice-president, rejected the proposal in September.

“No such request would be entertained. There will be no change in venue,” Singh said, adding that Pakistan would have to come to India if it wished to participate.

With the venue dispute unresolved, Pakistan’s withdrawal became official on October 9, and Bangladesh accepted the invitation to replace it.

Bangladesh Replaces Pakistan: Six Teams Confirmed

Bangladesh’s inclusion keeps the tournament at six participating teams. The revised line-up consists of India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and China.

The change gives Bangladesh an opportunity to test itself against Asia’s leading hockey nations, while India will begin its title defence against the replacement team rather than Pakistan.

India’s Revised Hockey Fixture List

India’s opening match is scheduled for October 27 against Bangladesh in Jalandhar. The league stage will continue until November 2, with the competition moving to Mohali for the decisive matches.

The key dates are:

October 27: India vs Bangladesh — opening match

November 1: India vs Malaysia — the date originally assigned to the Pakistan fixture

November 2: League-stage matches conclude

November 4: Semi-finals

November 5: Bronze-medal match and final

The India-Malaysia fixture is particularly notable because November 1 had originally been scheduled for India to face Pakistan. The revised programme means the teams will not meet in this tournament.

India’s Asian Games Success Raises Expectations

India enters the competition after a landmark achievement at the 2026 Asian Games, where the men’s team defended its title and secured a second consecutive gold medal. The achievement has raised expectations ahead of the home tournament, with the team now aiming to carry that momentum into the Asian Champions Trophy.

India is also the most successful side in the tournament’s history. It won the title in 2011, 2016, 2023 and 2024, and shared the 2018 title with Pakistan. The defending champions will therefore be under pressure to deliver another strong performance in front of home supporters.

Jalandhar and Mohali Set for Continental Hockey

The tournament will be staged at two major hockey venues in Punjab. The Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar will host all league-stage matches from October 27 to November 2. The action will then move to the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali for the semi-finals and medal matches.

For Punjab, hosting the competition brings international hockey back to a region deeply associated with the sport. The home crowd will have the chance to watch India compete for another continental title, even though one of the rivalry fixtures has disappeared from the schedule.

More Than a Fixture Change: A Recurring India-Pakistan Sporting Issue

Pakistan’s latest withdrawal follows its earlier decisions not to participate in the 2025 Asia Cup and the FIH Junior World Cup in Tamil Nadu, with security concerns also cited in those cases.

The Asian Champions Trophy dispute highlights the continuing difficulty of separating sporting competition from wider bilateral tensions. Pakistan said it wanted to participate but sought a neutral venue; Hockey India insisted that the event remain in India. Bangladesh’s entry has resolved the immediate scheduling problem, but it has not removed the wider issue.

For Indian hockey supporters, the absence of Pakistan means one less high-profile contest to anticipate. For the participating teams, however, the tournament remains a significant opportunity to challenge for a continental title.

India’s Focus Turns to the Asian Champions Trophy Title

With the revised schedule announced, India must now prepare for Bangladesh, China, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. The hosts will be looking to build on their Asian Games gold and use home advantage to add another trophy to their record.

Pakistan’s withdrawal has changed the story around the Asian Champions Trophy 2026, but the competition itself remains intact. The biggest question now is whether India can turn its recent success into another championship victory in Jalandhar and Mohali.
