Grigor Dimitrov Finds Redemption on Centre Court

Twelve months after leaving Centre Court in tears, Grigor Dimitrov has scripted one of the most emotional stories of Wimbledon 2026. The 35-year-old Bulgarian battled past former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling third-round contest, winning 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3 to book his place in the fourth round.

The victory was about much more than advancing in the tournament. It marked Dimitrov’s successful return to the same stage where his 2025 Wimbledon dream ended abruptly after a pectoral injury forced him to retire while leading eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets. This time, he walked off Centre Court smiling, having finally replaced painful memories with a memorable triumph.

Wimbledon 2026 – Men’s Singles, Third Round

Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria) beat Matteo Berrettini (Italy)

Score: 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3

A Match That Tested Every Nerve

Dimitrov looked in complete control early in the contest, taking the opening two sets with aggressive serving and precise shot-making. However, Berrettini refused to surrender. The Italian, known for his powerful serve and forehand, fought back by claiming the third and fourth sets to force a deciding fifth set.

With momentum slipping away, Dimitrov stayed composed when it mattered most. A brilliant backhand winner helped him earn a crucial break in the final set before he confidently served out one of his biggest victories in recent years after three hours and 32 minutes of high-quality tennis.

Turning Pain Into Motivation

The victory carried deep emotional significance for Dimitrov. Last year’s injury had left him wondering how far he could have gone at Wimbledon. Instead of dwelling on disappointment, he returned determined to create a new chapter.

After the match, Dimitrov admitted he wanted to “rewrite” his Wimbledon story and spoke about focusing on overcoming personal challenges rather than simply chasing victories. His comments reflected the mindset of a player who values resilience as much as results.

What’s Next?

Dimitrov now advances to the Round of 16, where he will take on British wildcard Arthur Fery. With several leading contenders no longer in his section of the draw, the experienced Bulgarian has a genuine opportunity to make another deep Grand Slam run.

A place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals would mark another major milestone in what is already shaping up to be one of the tournament’s most inspiring comeback stories.

Match Highlights

Grigor Dimitrov defeated Matteo Berrettini in five sets.

Final score: 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3.

Dimitrov reached the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time since last year’s heartbreaking injury.

The Bulgarian recovered after surrendering a two-set lead to secure victory in the deciding set.

He will next face British wildcard Arthur Fery for a place in the quarter-finals.
