France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland will headline one of the biggest clashes of the FIFA World Cup group stage when their sides meet on Friday in a battle for top spot in Group I. With both teams already through to the knockout stage, the contest will decide who finishes first and potentially earns a more favourable route in the last 32.

Both forwards have enjoyed explosive starts to the tournament, scoring four goals each in their opening two matches, with only Lionel Messi (five) ahead of them in the Golden Boot race.

Mbappe’s presence transforms France
Mbappe continues to be the driving force behind France’s attack. Since August 2022, Les Bleus have won 69.8% of their matches when he has featured, compared to just 50% without him. France also average 2.3 goals per game with the Real Madrid forward in the starting line-up, dropping to 1.9 in his absence.

The 27-year-old has now scored 16 World Cup goals in just 16 appearances and trails Messi’s all-time World Cup tally by only two goals. With age on his side, Mbappe appears well placed to eventually become the tournament’s highest scorer.

Haaland remains Norway’s biggest weapon

While Mbappe elevates an already star-studded France side, Haaland carries even greater responsibility for Norway. Since August 2022, Norway have won 64.5% of their matches with the Manchester City striker compared to only 33.3% without him.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable run for his country, scoring in 12 consecutive competitive internationals and netting 16 goals in his last six appearances. Despite playing only 52 internationals, Haaland has already scored 59 goals, just one fewer than Mbappe’s 60 from 100 matches.
His four goals in the opening two World Cup games have also placed him among an elite group of players to score multiple goals in each of their first two tournament appearances.

Different styles, same devastating impact
Although both are elite finishers, they influence matches in different ways. Mbappe is far more involved outside the penalty area, creating chances, carrying the ball and taking defenders on. He has attempted 14 dribbles in the World Cup so far, while Haaland has attempted just one.

Haaland’s greatest strength remains his ruthless finishing. Across the last four league seasons, he has converted 23.43% of his shots compared to Mbappe’s 18.24%, underlining his efficiency inside the box.

Mbappe, however, contributes more in build-up play, registering higher numbers for touches, shots and chances created during the club season.

Battle for top spot awaits

The meeting in Boston is expected to feature both stars despite qualification already being secured. Victory would secure first place in Group I and could provide a more favourable knockout draw.

With Mbappe chasing another World Cup title and Haaland leading Norway’s most promising generation in years, Friday’s encounter promises to be one of the standout matches of the group stage.
