Mexico has been selected to host the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, marking another major international basketball event for the North American nation.
The tournament, scheduled to take place from August 17 to 23, 2026, will serve as the first step on the qualification pathway to the women’s basketball competition at the LA28 Olympics. The winning team will earn a place in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in 2028.
Eight national teams that failed to qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup will compete in the event. The participating nations will be divided into two groups of four, with the top teams advancing to the knockout rounds in pursuit of the lone qualification berth available from the tournament.
Mexico’s appointment as host underlines the country’s growing stature in international basketball. In recent years, it has successfully staged several FIBA competitions, including the Women’s Basketball World Cup pre-qualifying tournament and various youth continental championships.
The event is expected to provide a significant boost for women’s basketball in the region while giving Mexico an opportunity to showcase its organisational capabilities on the international stage. Hosting the tournament will also offer local fans a chance to watch elite-level international competition as teams begin their journey toward Olympic qualification.
FIBA officials believe the competition will play a crucial role in shaping the race for places at the Los Angeles Games, with several ambitious nations expected to battle for the coveted spot in the 2028 Olympic qualifying events.
With the road to LA28 gathering momentum, the tournament promises high-quality competition and another milestone in Mexico’s growing relationship with global basketball.
