Washington D.C.: Organisers of the FIFA World Cup 2026 have deployed advanced counter-drone systems at every match venue across the United States as part of a comprehensive security strategy aimed at safeguarding players, officials and millions of fans attending the tournament.
According to Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA World Cup Task Force, all 78 World Cup matches scheduled in the United States are operating under counter-drone protection. Similar security coverage has also been extended to official fan festivals in each host city throughout the competition.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the potential misuse of drones at major sporting events. Security agencies have identified unmanned aerial systems as one of the most significant threats to large public gatherings because of their ability to bypass conventional security barriers and access restricted areas.
Authorities intensified security preparations after law enforcement agencies reportedly flagged major sporting events, including World Cup matches, as potential targets for drone-related disruptions. Federal agencies have implemented strict temporary flight restrictions around stadiums and fan zones, warning that violations could lead to severe penalties, including criminal prosecution and hefty fines.
The United States, alongside co-hosts Canada and Mexico, is staging the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup from June 11 to July 19. Security officials have invested heavily in drone-detection and mitigation technologies, with federal and local agencies working together to monitor airspace around venues and respond rapidly to any unauthorised drone activity.
Experts believe the World Cup will serve as one of the largest tests yet of modern counter-drone technology, with authorities employing a layered security network that includes radar systems, drone detection tools and advanced mitigation capabilities to ensure a safe tournament environment.
With millions of supporters expected to attend matches across North America, organisers remain confident that the enhanced security framework will help deliver a safe and successful World Cup experience for players and fans alike.
