The Chennai Bulls have unveiled a formidable leadership group ahead of the second season of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), appointing Argentine rugby star Santiago Alvarez as captain of the men’s team and Great Britain international Chantelle Miell as skipper of the women’s side.
Alvarez will spearhead the Bulls’ title defence after the franchise emerged as champions of the inaugural Rugby Premier League season in 2025. He will be assisted by Indian rugby stalwart Mohit Khatri, who has been named vice-captain. The Chennai-based outfit begins its campaign against Delhi Redz at Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Stadium on June 16.
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Alvarez said captaining a team as diverse and talented as the Bulls is both an honour and a challenge. The Argentine, who has previously led his national side, emphasized the franchise’s commitment to maintaining high standards and defending its crown.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Bulls women’s team will make history as part of the inaugural women’s Rugby Premier League. Chantelle Miell has been entrusted with leading the side, while Savannah Bauder will serve as vice-captain. Their campaign begins against Delhi Redz in the opening match of the women’s competition.
Miell hailed the launch of the women’s league as a landmark moment for rugby sevens and praised the Chennai franchise for investing in the growth of women’s rugby. She expressed confidence that the squad has the quality and ambition to compete for the first-ever women’s title.
The appointments underline Chennai Bulls’ ambitions across both competitions. With internationally acclaimed leaders at the helm and a squad packed with global and Indian talent, the franchise will be aiming not only to retain the men’s championship but also to make a strong statement in the women’s tournament.
As Rugby Premier League Season 2 gets underway, Chennai Bulls enter the competition as one of the favourites, carrying the weight of expectations and a growing legacy in Indian rugby.
