Indian chess sensation Divya Deshmukh continued her remarkable run at the Norway Chess Women 2026 tournament, moving into sole leadership after a hard-fought victory over China’s Zhu Jiner in Round 5. The result marked one of the most important wins of the event so far and underlined the young Indian’s growing stature among the world’s elite players.

In a tense classical encounter, both players fought evenly for long stretches before the game entered a demanding endgame phase. As the clock ticked down, Deshmukh maintained her composure and capitalized on key inaccuracies from Zhu, converting her advantage into a full-point victory. The win proved especially valuable as it was the only decisive classical result in the women’s section during the round.

A Turning Point in the Tournament

Heading into Round 5, the competition remained tightly packed, with several players in contention for the lead. Deshmukh’s victory allowed her to break away from the chasing pack and take control of the standings.

The Indian Grandmaster has displayed exceptional consistency throughout the tournament. Earlier in the event, she secured important points against some of the strongest players in the field, including reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun in an Armageddon tie-break. Her ability to perform under pressure has become one of the defining features of her campaign.

Deshmukh’s Rising Reputation

The Norway Chess Women tournament features some of the world’s top female players, making Deshmukh’s performance even more impressive. At just 20 years old, she has shown maturity beyond her years, combining tactical sharpness with strong endgame technique.

Already recognized as one of India’s brightest chess talents, Deshmukh continues to build on the momentum generated by her breakthrough achievements over the past year. Her latest success in Stavanger reinforces her status as a serious contender on the global stage.

Round 5 Key Result

Divya Deshmukh (India) beat Zhu Jiner (China) in classical chess.

The victory moved Deshmukh into first place in the Norway Chess Women standings.

It was the only classical win in the women’s section in Round 5.

The result strengthened India’s presence at one of the most prestigious chess tournaments in the world.

What Lies Ahead?

With several rounds still remaining, the title race is far from over. However, by taking the lead at this stage of the tournament, Deshmukh has placed herself in an excellent position. The remaining rounds will test her endurance, preparation and ability to handle the pressure that comes with leading a world-class field.

For Indian chess fans, the performance is another encouraging sign of the country’s growing influence in international chess, with a new generation of players consistently challenging for top honours on the global circuit.
