James Lowe’s future at Leinster remains uncertain despite the Ireland international producing a record-breaking performance in the province’s United Rugby Championship quarter-final victory over the Lions.

The 33-year-old winger scored his 70th and 71st tries for Leinster during the 59-10 win, surpassing Shane Horgan’s long-standing record on his 100th appearance for the club.

However, Lowe’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season and there has been no confirmation of a new deal. Speaking after the match, Leinster head coach Leo Cullen declined to provide any update on the player’s situation.

“James will come out in terms of his own individual piece, so it’s not really right for me to comment on him at this moment in time,” Cullen said.

Before the game, Cullen had acknowledged that discussions regarding player contracts were ongoing, while also suggesting that some players could leave at the end of the campaign.

Ireland Career Could Depend On Next Move

Since arriving from New Zealand side Chiefs in 2017, Lowe has become one of Leinster’s most influential players and a key figure for Ireland.

After qualifying through residency, he made his Ireland debut in 2020 and has since earned 45 caps, scoring 17 international tries. He played a major role in Ireland’s Six Nations title wins in 2023 and 2024 and was also part of the British and Irish Lions squad that toured Australia last year.

Any move away from Ireland could affect Lowe’s international future, as players based outside the country are generally unavailable for national team selection. Such a decision could potentially end his hopes of featuring at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell had previously indicated that both Lowe and Bundee Aki were expected to remain in Irish rugby. While Aki has since signed a new one-year contract with Connacht, Lowe’s situation remains unresolved.

Despite missing Leinster’s Champions Cup final defeat to Bordeaux after recovering from a hamstring injury, Lowe showed his quality against the Lions with another match-winning display.

Cullen praised the winger’s contribution over the years, describing him as a unique character who has brought energy and quality to the squad since joining the province.

Leinster now prepare for a URC semi-final against the Stormers, while uncertainty continues to surround one of the club’s most influential players.
