Cullen Hits Back At Media After Leinster Edge Toulon Thriller

Leinster boss defends players and criticises coverage after dramatic semi-final win

Leo Cullen has accused the media of being overly critical after Leinster Rugby survived a late scare to beat RC Toulon and reach the Investec Champions Cup final.

Leinster looked in control for much of the semi-final but saw an 18-point lead reduced to just four in the closing stages before sealing a tense 29-25 victory.

Cullen defends team performance

Cullen urged for greater support for his side, pointing out the difficulty of competing at the highest level against Europe’s top clubs. He said the media often “throw the boot in” when results or performances fall short of expectations.

Despite not hitting their usual standards throughout the tournament, Leinster have once again reached the final, keeping alive their hopes of a first title since 2018.

Ioane delivers key moment

Rieko Ioane played a crucial role late in the game, producing a vital defensive intervention to deny Toulon a potential match-winning score.

Known primarily for his attacking ability, Ioane’s defensive contribution proved decisive in a match that swung dramatically in the final minutes.

Memories of past heartbreak

Cullen also referenced last year’s semi-final defeat to Northampton Saints, where Leinster fell just short in a dramatic finish. He suggested key refereeing decisions had gone against his team, adding to the frustration surrounding media narratives.

The Irish province have lost three consecutive finals between 2022 and 2024, increasing the pressure to finally convert their strong runs into silverware.

Focus shifts to final

Leinster will now travel to Bilbao for the final, where they will face either Union Bordeaux-Bègles or Bath Rugby.

Cullen also provided updates on key players, confirming that Robbie Henshaw and Josh van der Flier will follow concussion protocols, while others will be assessed ahead of the final.

With a fifth Champions Cup title within reach, Leinster now have the opportunity to silence critics and end their recent run of near misses on the biggest stage.
