India Face Bowling Concerns Ahead of New Zealand ODI Series
India will begin their five-match ODI series against New Zealand in Auckland on Wednesday, with concerns over their depleted pace attack emerging as a major challenge. While veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will attract significant attention on their final tour of the Southern Hemisphere, India’s bowling combination could give the hosts an advantage.
Experienced Siraj to Lead India’s Pace Attack
India will miss the services of Jasprit Bumrah, who is being rested to focus on Test cricket, while Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana are yet to return to international action. Mohammed Siraj will therefore shoulder additional responsibility in the pace department.
The remaining specialist fast bowlers, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar, Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi, have a combined experience of just 29 ODIs. India are also expected to manage players’ workloads ahead of the upcoming World Test Championship fixtures against New Zealand.
Captain Shubman Gill confirmed that some Test regulars would miss the final two ODIs because of the short gap between the formats.
Kuldeep Yadav’s Selection Poses a Challenge
India’s batting line-up appears largely settled, with Rohit Sharma and Gill expected to open, followed by Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.
However, the selection of wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav remains a key question. Despite being India’s highest ODI wicket-taker in the current squad with 201 wickets, his inclusion could be difficult in the absence of an additional all-rounder like Hardik Pandya.
Gill stressed the importance of having wicket-taking options during the middle overs, particularly with fielding restrictions allowing only four players outside the 30-yard circle.
New Zealand Face Their Own Challenges
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has acknowledged concerns over the ageing composition of his squad, with the average age of players between 34 and 35. He indicated that the 2027 ODI World Cup could be the final major tournament for several members of the team.
The opening ODI will begin at 7:30 AM Indian Standard Time on Wednesday. The five-match series will conclude on November 15, ahead of the two teams’ Test commitments.
