India’s Pooja Singh produced a stunning performance on May 29, 2026, in Hong Kong, clearing 1.93 metres in the women’s high jump to smash the 14-year-old national record at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships. The jump not only secured the gold medal for the young Indian but also marked a significant milestone in Indian athletics.
The previous national record was held by Sahana Kumari since 2012. Pooja’s historic leap highlights her emergence as a major talent in Indian track and field.
Strong showing by India In the decathlon, Rahul Jakhar claimed gold with a new U20 national record of 7,185 points, achieving personal bests in seven out of ten events. Upkar completed a 1-2 finish for India by winning silver. A total of 48 Indian athletes (30 men and 18 women) are competing at the championships, which run from May 28 to 31.
The squad was selected based on performances at domestic events, including the Junior Federation Cup in Tumakuru. Indian athletes are also targeting qualification spots for the World U20 Athletics Championships 2026, scheduled for August in Hayward Field, USA.
