Indian Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha delivered a composed and consistent performance to win the 2026 Commonwealth Chess Championship in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, adding another prestigious international title to his growing career. The Kolkata-based player remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and finished at the top of the standings with 7.5 points from nine rounds.

Guha sealed the title after drawing his final-round encounter against fellow Indian Rohith Krishna. Entering the last round as one of the frontrunners, the Indian Grandmaster played with maturity and control to ensure he stayed ahead of the chasing pack and lifted the coveted Commonwealth crown.

The championship witnessed participation from several talented players representing Commonwealth nations, making the competition highly intense from the opening rounds. However, Guha maintained remarkable consistency across the event, combining solid opening preparation with sharp tactical awareness during crucial moments.

One of the defining aspects of Guha’s campaign was his unbeaten run. While many contenders dropped valuable points in pressure situations, the Indian GM showed calmness under pressure and managed to collect important victories during the middle rounds of the tournament. His ability to avoid major mistakes and convert promising positions proved decisive in the title race.

Sri Lanka’s Ranindu Dilshan emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament and remained close to the leaders till the final stages. However, Guha’s steady performances ensured that he maintained his advantage and eventually finished as the overall champion.

The victory is another major milestone in Guha’s chess journey. Over the last few years, he has steadily built a reputation as one of India’s most dependable young Grandmasters. His performances in domestic and international events have highlighted his growth as a complete player capable of handling high-pressure situations against strong opposition.

The Commonwealth title also reflects the continued rise of Indian chess on the world stage. India has produced several elite Grandmasters in recent years, and the country’s growing depth in chess continues to impress the global community. Young Indian players are consistently performing in major tournaments, and Guha’s latest success further strengthens that narrative.

Indian chess has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the past decade, inspired largely by the legacy of former world champion Viswanathan Anand. The emergence of a new generation of players has ensured that India remains one of the strongest forces in world chess, across both senior and junior levels.

For Mitrabha Guha, the Commonwealth crown could serve as another important step towards bigger achievements in the international circuit. With confidence growing and consistent results coming his way, the Indian Grandmaster will now look to carry this momentum into upcoming elite tournaments.
