United World Wrestling (UWW) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Smoothcomp AB to collaborate on digital solutions and event management systems for associated combat sports including Grappling, Pankration and Amateur MMA.
The agreement was signed in Lausanne, Switzerland and will initially remain in effect for 12 months. Under the partnership, UWW will evaluate Smoothcomp’s competition software and explore ways to improve athlete registration, tournament management and live event operations.
The move reflects UWW’s growing push toward technology-driven management systems as combat sports continue expanding globally.
Focus on grappling and amateur MMA growth
The partnership is expected to play an important role in the development of amateur MMA and grappling competitions under the UWW umbrella.
Smoothcomp’s platform already supports various combat sports worldwide with services such as online registration, scheduling, bracket systems, live scoring and event administration.
UWW said the agreement would also help support pilot projects and future development initiatives connected to associated combat sports.
The governing body has been increasingly active in expanding amateur MMA structures over the last few years, especially after officially bringing MMA under its governance framework in 2023.
Possible integration with UWW systems
One of the key areas under discussion is the possible integration between Smoothcomp’s systems and UWW’s existing digital platforms, including the Athena management system used across international competitions.
Officials believe smoother digital integration could improve efficiency for athletes, coaches, federations and organisers involved in UWW-sanctioned events.
The collaboration is also expected to enhance competition tracking, athlete data management and operational consistency across tournaments worldwide.
Amateur MMA gaining global momentum
Amateur MMA has witnessed rapid international growth in recent years, with increasing participation across Europe, Asia and the Americas.
UWW has already organised global MMA championships and youth-level events as part of its effort to establish a more structured international pathway for the sport.
Combat sports observers believe digital infrastructure partnerships like this could become crucial in helping amateur MMA evolve with Olympic-style governance and professional event standards.
Technology becoming central to combat sports
The agreement highlights how technology platforms are becoming increasingly important in modern sports administration.
From real-time brackets and scoring systems to athlete databases and event streaming, digital tools are now central to managing large international competitions efficiently.
For UWW, the collaboration with Smoothcomp signals another step toward strengthening its global ecosystem for wrestling-related combat sports and emerging disciplines.
