India’s senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in the national setup as the BCCI announced squads for the upcoming Afghanistan series, with young batter Shubman Gill set to captain the ODI side.
The Afghanistan tour of India will feature a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series in June. While Gill continues to lead India’s transition phase in white-ball cricket, the return of Rohit and Kohli has added major excitement among fans ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup preparations.
Rohit-Kohli Return Headlines ODI Squad
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both active only in the ODI format now, have been included in the 50-over squad after missing recent assignments. The selectors have, however, rested pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as part of workload management following IPL 2026.
Youngsters Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar earned maiden call-ups, signaling India’s continued focus on building bench strength ahead of future ICC events.
Leadership Shake-Up In Test Team
The selection meeting also brought major leadership changes in the Test setup. KL Rahul has reportedly replaced Rishabh Pant as vice-captain for the one-off Test against Afghanistan. Pant was also left out of the ODI squad.
Gill, meanwhile, continues to be projected as India’s long-term captaincy option across formats after already taking charge of the ODI side.

- One-off Test: June 6-10, New Chandigarh
- 1st ODI: June 14, Dharamshala
- 2nd ODI: June 17, Lucknow
- 3rd ODI: June 20, Chennai
