SV Elversberg secured promotion to the Bundesliga after a commanding 3-0 victory over Preussen Munster on Sunday.
Goals from Bambase Conte and David Mokwa inside the opening 15 minutes put Elversberg in complete control before Mokwa added his second goal in the second half to confirm a second-place finish in the 2. Bundesliga.
The result sparked emotional celebrations as supporters flooded the pitch at the Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde after the final whistle.
Tiny town prepares for top-flight football
With a population of around 13,000 people, Spiesen-Elversberg will become the smallest town ever to host a Bundesliga club.
Elversberg’s home ground currently holds around 10,000 fans, though renovation work is already under way to meet Bundesliga standards.
The stadium capacity is expected to increase to 15,000 by spring 2027.
A rapid rise through German football
SV Elversberg have enjoyed a remarkable climb through the German football pyramid.
The club, founded in 1907 and based in the Saarland region of south-west Germany, were playing in the regional fourth division as recently as the 2021-22 season.
They had never even appeared in the second tier before the 2023-24 campaign.
This latest success marks their third promotion in just five years.
Last season’s heartbreak inspired promotion push
Elversberg narrowly missed out on promotion last season after losing 4-3 on aggregate to 1. FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga promotion-relegation play-off.
Before that tie, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn mocked the club’s small fanbase by posting an image of a one-carriage train, joking that Elversberg supporters would not need additional transport services.
One year later, the club have completed their fairytale rise to the Bundesliga.
Schalke return while play-off battle awaits
Schalke 04 also secured promotion after winning the 2. Bundesliga title and will return to the Bundesliga after a three-year absence.
Meanwhile, VfL Wolfsburg and SC Paderborn will meet in the promotion-relegation play-off after finishing 16th in the Bundesliga and third in the second division respectively.
