Arsenal Women secured second place in the Women’s Super League with a convincing 3-1 victory over Liverpool Women at Anfield.
The win guarantees Arsenal automatic qualification for the league phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, while Liverpool finished the season in 11th place, seven points clear of bottom side Leicester City Women.
Russo and Caldentey put Arsenal in control before half-time
Alessia Russo opened the scoring in the 21st minute when her floated delivery into the box drifted beyond everyone and found the back of the net.
Arsenal doubled their advantage through Mariona Caldentey after an excellent short-corner routine involving Katie McCabe. Caldentey fired a powerful effort across goal to make it 2-0.
Russo then grabbed her second goal before the break, finishing brilliantly into the top corner after meeting a low cross from Victoria Pelova.
Despite the scoreline, Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk produced several strong saves to prevent the margin from becoming even heavier before half-time.
Liverpool pull one back but Arsenal cruise to victory
Liverpool improved after the break and managed to score a consolation goal in the 74th minute through substitute Zara Shaw, who converted from close range after good work by Gemma Bonner.
However, Arsenal remained comfortable throughout the second half and safely saw out the result to end the campaign on a positive note.
The defeat leaves Liverpool just above the relegation zone at the end of a difficult season, while Arsenal finish as runners-up behind champions Chelsea Women.
