Hemanth Muddappa etched his name deeper into Indian motorsport history after officially securing his record-breaking 18th National title following a verdict from the Indian Motor Sports Appeals Court (IMSAC).
The Bengaluru-based rider, popularly known as India’s “Drag King,” was reinstated as the 2025 National Champion in the premier Unrestricted class after IMSAC overturned an earlier controversial decision from the final round of the MMSC FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Drag Racing Championship.
Controversy Surrounding the Final Race
The dispute originated during the championship-deciding race at the Madras International Circuit in December 2025.
Officials had initially accused Muddappa of a jump start during the final run. Although race authorities first allowed a rerun — which Muddappa won — the result was later reversed, leading to his disqualification and handing the title to rival Hanuman Pawshe.
However, after reviewing race footage and procedural details, IMSAC concluded there was no clear visual evidence proving a false start. The appeals court also criticised the reversal process, stating it lacked proper justification and violated principles of fairness and natural justice.
Muddappa Becomes India’s Most Decorated Two-Wheeler Champion
With the restored championship, Muddappa’s tally rose to an incredible 18 National titles — the highest ever achieved by a two-wheeler racer in Indian motorsport history.
The achievement further strengthened his legendary partnership with long-time tuner Sharan Pratap, with the duo dominating Indian drag racing for nearly a decade.
Muddappa also completed a remarkable Triple Crown during the 2025 season by winning titles in:
- Unrestricted Super Sport class
- Super Sport 851-1050cc
- Super Sport 1051-1650cc
Emotional Reaction From the ‘Drag King’
Following the verdict, Muddappa expressed relief and satisfaction after months of uncertainty.
The champion said justice had finally prevailed and insisted he had won the title fairly on the track. His response reflected both pride and frustration after one of the most dramatic championship disputes in Indian motorsport in recent years.
Dominance Continues on the Racing Circuit
Muddappa’s dominance has become a defining story in Indian motorcycle drag racing. Earlier in 2025, he also defeated 13-time world champion Ricky Gadson during The Valley Run event while riding his BMW S1000RR, further enhancing his reputation internationally.
The latest verdict not only restored a championship but also cemented Muddappa’s legacy as one of the greatest motorsport athletes India has produced.
