England Shake Up Top Order Ahead of T20 World Cup Warm-Up Against Australia

England have made a significant statement ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup by leaving out Sophia Dunkley for their warm-up clash against Australia, with wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones promoted to open the innings alongside Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

The decision comes just days before England begin their World Cup campaign and reflects the fierce competition for places within Charlotte Edwards’ squad. While Dunkley has remained a regular feature at the top of the order over the past year, a series of low scores in recent matches appears to have prompted the management to explore alternative combinations.

Jones has strengthened her case with important contributions in recent weeks. During England’s T20I series against India, she produced a fighting 67 in the opening match, showing both composure and attacking intent despite England suffering a 38-run defeat.

The move also follows England’s encouraging 2-1 T20I series victory over India. In the deciding match at Taunton, England successfully chased 181 runs, winning by six wickets thanks to a remarkable 137-run partnership between Alice Capsey and Heather Knight. Capsey smashed a career-best 82 from 43 balls, while Knight remained unbeaten on 70, helping England register one of their most memorable T20 run chases before the World Cup.

With captain Nat Sciver-Brunt returning from injury and expected to bat at No. 3, England’s batting order is beginning to take shape. Head coach Charlotte Edwards now faces several selection dilemmas as multiple players push for starting spots.

The warm-up against Australia is expected to provide a final opportunity for England to fine-tune their combination before the tournament opener against Sri Lanka Women on June 12. Hosts England have been placed in a group alongside Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies, Ireland and Scotland, and will be aiming to begin their home World Cup campaign on a strong note.

While Dunkley’s omission may only be temporary, it underlines the pressure for performances in a squad chasing World Cup glory on home soil. England’s management appears determined to identify the most effective batting combination before the tournament reaches its decisive stages.
