CHENNAI: The sixth leg of the Indian Athletics Series 2026 delivered a thrilling afternoon of elite competition at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, with marquee names staking strong claims ahead of the Federation Cup and major international events later this season.

Long Jump Dominance from Sreeshankar

Asian Games silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar stamped his authority in the men’s long jump, claiming gold with a best leap of 8.04m. The Kerala jumper, fresh from a strong domestic season, showed attacking form with three legal efforts, the highlight coming on his fourth jump. Speaking after the competition, Sreeshankar said, “Every competition builds confidence. My focus is on consistency and hitting big marks when it matters.”

Hurdles Thriller: Shirse Edges Past Krishik

In a nail-biting finish, national record holder Tejas Shirse clinched the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.43 seconds, narrowly fending off teammate M Krishik, who clocked 13.44s. Shirse, returning to top form after injury setbacks earlier in the season, described the race as “a tough battle but the perfect test before bigger meets.”

Supporting Highlights Across the Track and Field

Santhosh Kumar T. won the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.47s, with all three medalists dipping under 50 seconds.

In sprints, Pranav Pramod took the 100m in 10.32s, while Rajesh Ramesh claimed the 200m in 21.23s.

Aadarsh Ram impressed in the high jump, clearing 2.27m for top honours.

In technical events, Praveen Chithravel secured the triple jump with 16.95m.

The meet’s results reflect the rising standards in Indian athletics, with several performances inching close to key qualification marks for upcoming international championships. Athletes and coaches are now turning their focus to the Federation Cup, the next major domestic test on the calendar.
