AFL Round 9 Team News: Big Injury Blows, Selection Shocks Rock Clubs Ahead of Key Clashes

AFL clubs are grappling with major injury concerns and selection dilemmas ahead of a blockbuster Round 9, with several high-profile players ruled out or under fitness clouds.

Sydney Swans suffered a major setback after coach Dean Cox confirmed key forward Charlie Curnow will miss the clash against North Melbourne due to an abdominal issue. Defender Jai Serong has also been sidelined with hamstring tightness.

Essendon, meanwhile, made headlines with reports that experienced defender Ben McKay has been dropped following criticism over recent performances. The move comes after the Bombers’ heavy defeat to Brisbane, where McKay endured a difficult outing.

Hawthorn also swung the axe ahead of its crucial clash with Fremantle, leaving out veteran Jack Scrimshaw while handing young defender Bodie Ryan his AFL debut. The Hawks are looking to halt Fremantle’s impressive winning streak in what shapes as one of the most anticipated games of the round.

The Western Bulldogs received mixed news on the injury front. Captain Marcus Bontempelli is expected to play despite battling a bruised heel and ongoing knee soreness. However, Laitham Vandermeer is set for time on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

North Melbourne could welcome back George Wardlaw after illness, though star midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke remains in doubt with hamstring tightness.

Elsewhere, St Kilda forward Max King is expected to miss another six weeks with a hamstring injury, continuing a frustrating run of setbacks for the talented key forward.

Geelong is hopeful defender Jack Henry will return for the high-profile showdown against Collingwood, while the Magpies are set to regain veteran stars Scott Pendlebury and Jeremy Howe.

With finals ambitions beginning to take shape, Round 9 could prove pivotal for several clubs battling injuries, form slumps, and tough selection calls across the competition.
