Turkey set for F1 calendar return in 2027

Formula 1 will return to Turkey in 2027, marking the comeback of the Turkish Grand Prix after a six-year absence.

The race will take place at Istanbul Park under a deal that runs until at least 2031.

Return after pandemic-era appearances

Turkey previously hosted F1 races between 2005 and 2011 before dropping off the calendar. It briefly returned in 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic when the sport needed additional venues.

The circuit is particularly memorable for Lewis Hamilton, who secured his seventh world title there in dramatic wet conditions in 2020.

No expansion to race calendar

Despite Turkey’s addition, the overall F1 calendar will remain capped at 24 races. The event will instead rotate with other grands prix or replace races whose contracts expire.

For example, the Belgian Grand Prix is set to follow a rotational hosting model between 2026 and 2031.

Strong backing from officials

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed the return, highlighting the sport’s popularity and growing fan base in the country.

F1 chief Stefano Domenicali also praised Istanbul as a unique destination that blends history with modern sporting appeal.

Strategic move for global growth

The return reflects Formula 1’s continued push to balance historic venues with new markets, while maintaining a global footprint.

With its challenging layout and passionate fans, Istanbul Park is expected to once again become a fan-favourite stop on the calendar.
