Matheesha Pathirana KKR IPL 2026 update brings relief for the franchise as the Sri Lankan pacer has received clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket to travel to India and link up with Kolkata Knight Riders. The development comes after the fast bowler successfully cleared the mandatory Sri Lanka Cricket fitness test.
The decision means Pathirana joins Kolkata Knight Riders during IPL 2026 at a crucial stage for the team. According to reports, the pacer is expected to arrive in India around April 17 and link up with the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL squad ahead of their match schedule.
However, the pacer is likely to be available for selection only after the KKR medical team assesses his condition following his arrival.
Return after injury setback
The Matheesha Pathirana injury return comes after the Sri Lankan speedster had been sidelined with a calf strain picked up during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Because of that injury, Pathirana missed the opening phase of the tournament.
After passing the Sri Lanka Cricket fitness test, the board issued the Sri Lanka Cricket NOC Pathirana required to participate in IPL 2026.
His arrival could provide a much-needed KKR bowling boost IPL 2026 as the franchise has struggled with injuries and inconsistency in the bowling attack.
KKR struggling early in IPL 2026
The latest IPL 2026 KKR news comes at a difficult time for the team. Kolkata Knight Riders are currently at the bottom of the points table after failing to win any of their first four matches.
Their campaign started with a defeat despite posting a huge total against Mumbai Indians. Since then, the side has also lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad and suffered another setback against Lucknow Super Giants.
The bowling department has been a major concern for the team this season. Injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep have weakened the pace attack, while the Varun Chakravarthy form slump has further added to the challenges.
When Pathirana could play for KKR
Pathirana joins Kolkata Knight Riders just ahead of a busy phase in their schedule. The team is set to face Gujarat Titans next, though the pacer is unlikely to feature in that KKR vs Gujarat Titans match.
Instead, he could make his first appearance in the KKR vs Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 game once the franchise medical staff declare him match-fit.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out IPL 2026 earlier after failing to recover from his injury, making Pathirana’s availability even more important for KKR.
If fully fit, Matheesha Pathirana KKR IPL 2026 return could significantly strengthen the bowling attack as the team looks to revive its campaign in the coming matches.
