Chennai: Jonathan Trott has bid farewell to Afghanistan’s national side, bringing the curtain down on a transformative three-and-a-half-year stint as head coach following their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Afghanistan ended their campaign on a commanding note, registering an emphatic 82-run victory over Canada in Chennai. However, earlier defeats to New Zealand and South Africa meant the Asian side narrowly missed out on a place in the Super Eights stage.
Despite the early exit, Trott reflected on his tenure with immense pride, highlighting the team’s growth and landmark achievements during his leadership. The former England international guided Afghanistan to historic milestones, including a memorable semi-final appearance at the 2024 T20 World Cup and significant wins against top-ranked sides across formats.
Speaking after his final match in charge, Trott described his time with the squad as deeply rewarding. He praised the players not only for their cricketing skills but also for their character and commitment to improvement.
Afghanistan’s rise under Trott has been marked by fearless performances on the global stage. From breakthrough victories against established cricketing nations to consistent showings in bilateral series, the team has evolved into a competitive force in world cricket.
Looking ahead, Trott stressed the importance of strengthening Afghanistan’s pace-bowling resources to complement their formidable spin attack led by stars such as Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. He believes developing reliable seamers will be crucial, particularly with major tournaments scheduled in pace-friendly conditions in the coming years.
The 44-year-old coach, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career with England, said he intends to take a short break before considering his next move. While he remains open to future opportunities, Trott emphasised his desire to continue enjoying the coaching journey that has already brought him considerable satisfaction.
As Afghanistan regroup and look toward the next global cycle, Trott departs having played a central role in shaping one of cricket’s most inspiring modern success stories.
