Aston Villa’s Premier League title push suffered a major setback as Brentford edged a 1–0 win at Villa Park, thanks to a decisive goal from Dango Ouattara — despite playing more than half the match with 10 men.
Brentford were reduced to a man down in the 42nd minute when Kevin Schade was sent off for violent conduct against Matty Cash. Yet moments later, Ouattara struck in first-half stoppage time, firing a rebound into the top corner to silence the home crowd.
Villa believed they had equalised early in the second half when Tammy Abraham, on his return to the club, converted a rebound — but the goal was ruled out after a lengthy VAR review, with officials determining the ball had gone out of play in the buildup.
Despite dominating possession and piling on pressure, Unai Emery’s side failed to break down a resilient Brentford defence led by goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, who produced several key saves .
“This was one of our most determined performances,” Brentford boss Keith Andrews said, praising his side’s discipline under pressure .
The result leaves Villa seven points behind league leaders Arsenal, while Brentford climb into seventh, keeping their European hopes alive .
