Jessica Pegula brought an end to Madison Keys’ Australian Open title defence with a confident straight-sets win on Rod Laver Arena.
The sixth seed defeated her close friend 6-3, 6-4 in just 78 minutes to book a quarter-final clash with fellow American Amanda Anisimova.
Friendship tested on court
Despite hitting 26 winners, Keys struggled with consistency and made 28 unforced errors, which proved costly against Pegula’s steady baseline play.
Pegula stayed calm in long rallies and took her chances at key moments, especially in the second set, to close out the match comfortably.
“Playing a friend is never easy,” Pegula said. “You want to win, but you also want them to do well.”
A bet adds extra spice
The match also decided a light-hearted bet between the two podcast partners.
With her victory, Pegula ensured that Keys must now try apple pie topped with melted cheddar cheese — a long-standing family tradition.
“A bet is a bet,” Keys said later. “I’ll do it, even if it sounds a bit gross.”
Had Keys won, Pegula would have been forced to wear a Kansas City Chiefs jersey, something she was keen to avoid.
Anisimova awaits next
Pegula will next face fourth seed Amanda Anisimova, who defeated China’s Xinyu Wang 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to reach her first Australian Open quarter-final.
Anisimova is yet to drop a set in the tournament and is enjoying one of the strongest runs of her career.
American dominance continues
With Pegula, Anisimova, Coco Gauff and Iva Jovic all reaching the last eight, the United States has four players in the women’s quarter-finals for the first time since 2001.
Keys, meanwhile, remained positive despite her exit.
“I’m proud of how I handled the pressure,” she said. “Being defending champion is never easy.”
