Bhubaneswar: In a bold move that could redefine India’s footprint in global athletics, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has officially bidded to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028, showcasing the country’s growing ambitions on the international sports stage.
This week, a high-powered delegation from World Athletics, led by Vice President Adille J. Sumariwalla, visited the Kalinga Stadium Complex in Bhubaneswar — the proposed venue — for a detailed inspection of its facilities, including the state-of-the-art Indoor Athletics Centre.
“Odisha has the necessary facilities to host sporting events at all levels,” said Suryabanshi Suraj, Odisha’s Minister for Sports and Youth Services, during the onsite meeting. “We have strong fan support and, after successfully conducting the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze last year, we are set to host the Silver Meet this year. I hope we can collaborate with World Athletics and AFI to add this prestigious milestone to our sporting journey.”
Why Bhubaneswar?
The emphasis on Bhubaneswar’s credentials isn’t accidental. The Kalinga Stadium has been steadily building its reputation as a premier athletics destination — hosting international meets and expanding indoor track capabilities. Officials believe its infrastructure, hospitality services, and sporting culture meet global standards required for the 2028 Indoor Championships.
“In line with the Prime Minister’s vision, India is bidding for the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2028. The infrastructure, hospitality, and sporting culture in Bhubaneswar are at par with global standards,” said Dr. Sumariwalla, underlining the government’s support for the campaign.
A Strategic Push for Global Recognition
India’s bid comes at a time when the nation is increasingly seeking to host major athletics competitions. While New Zealand has also expressed interest in hosting the 2028 edition, India’s proposal aligns with its broader push to bring world-class track and field events to home soil — a move that could greatly benefit local fans and aspiring athletes alike.
If successful, this would mark a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey and place Bhubaneswar among elite host cities for international athletics — a huge leap forward for a nation long eager to expand its influence in global sports.
