Arsenal were held to a goalless draw by Liverpool on Thursday at the Emirates Stadium, missing the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points. The result also denied the Gunners a sixth consecutive home league win, leaving them to settle for a single point in a match that promised more.
The Gunners dominated the early stages, with much of their play flowing through Bukayo Saka, who saw a dangerous cross cleared just in front of goal. Despite controlling possession, Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances, failing to register a meaningful shot between the 45th minute and stoppage time.
Liverpool grew into the game and came closest to breaking the deadlock when Conor Bradley’s inventive effort hit the crossbar, shortly before the full-back was carried off with a knee injury. That moment highlighted the visitors’ growing confidence as Arsenal’s momentum waned.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal unable to seriously trouble goalkeeper Alisson. Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick for Liverpool skimmed the top of the net, and the Reds looked comfortable on the break despite missing key forwards Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. Late substitutions including Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke failed to spark the breakthrough, while Gabriel Magalhães’ best effort found only the side netting.
Frustration boiled over late in the game, as Gabriel Martinelli clashed with the injured Bradley, reflecting Arsenal’s growing impatience. The final whistle was met with a subdued reaction from the Emirates faithful.
While Arsenal remain six points clear at the top, the draw gives renewed hope to Manchester City and other title contenders that the gap can be closed. Liverpool, meanwhile, take encouragement from a disciplined performance and a point that preserves their top-four hopes, though the injury to Bradley is a concern ahead of their FA Cup tie against Barnsley.
Arsenal now turn their attention to cup fixtures against Portsmouth and Chelsea before returning to Premier League action at Nottingham Forest on 17 January. Whether this draw will be remembered as a valuable point gained or an opportunity missed could prove crucial in the title race.
