Gary O’Neil has been appointed as Strasbourg manager following Liam Rosenior’s departure to Chelsea earlier this week.
Return to management after Wolves exit
The 42-year-old former Bournemouth and Wolves boss returns to management after being sacked by Wolves in December 2024. O’Neil said he was “proud” to join a club with a “high-quality squad and clear, ambitious goals for the season”.
“Racing has a unique history, extraordinary passion and great resilience,” O’Neil said. “There are loyal fans who want to see attractive football and success. My priority is to work hard with the team and give everything for the club.”
Strasbourg move quickly after Rosenior exit
Strasbourg, who currently sit seventh in Ligue 1, acted swiftly to appoint O’Neil after Rosenior joined Chelsea on a six-and-a-half-year deal on Tuesday. The French club are part of the BlueCo multi-club ownership group, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, which also owns Chelsea.
Club backing and first match details
Strasbourg president Marc Keller described O’Neil as a “demanding and respected coach” with a modern approach that fits the club’s sporting project. O’Neil will take charge of his first match in Saturday’s French Cup tie against Avranches.
Premier League experience and past roles
After beginning his managerial career at Bournemouth, O’Neil has managed 88 Premier League matches. He guided the Cherries to safety in the 2022-23 season after replacing Scott Parker, but was dismissed at the end of the campaign.
Mixed spell at Wolves
O’Neil returned to management with Wolves for the 2023-24 season, leading them to a 14th-place finish and an FA Cup quarter-final. However, his second season at Molineux proved difficult, and he was sacked in December 2024 with the club in the relegation zone.
