In an unprecedented and controversial move, the Gabonese government has suspended the national football team indefinitely and permanently banned star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following a humiliating exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The announcement was made on national television Wednesday by Acting Sports Minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula, who described the “Panthers” performance as a “disgrace to the Republic.”
Chaotic Exit from AFCON
Gabon’s disastrous campaign ended with a shocking 3–2 defeat to Ivory Coast. Despite leading 2–0 for much of the match, the Panthers conceded three late goals, including a stoppage-time winner from Bazoumana Touré, leaving them at the bottom of Group F.
Earlier defeats against Cameroon and Mozambique had already ended Gabon’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages, making the loss to Ivory Coast the final embarrassment in a campaign to forget.
The Gabonese government has announced sweeping measures:
Indefinite Suspension: All senior national team activities are halted immediately.
Technical Staff Dismissed: Head coach Thierry Mouyouma and his assistants have been sacked.
Veteran Bans: Aubameyang (36) and captain Bruno Ecuele Manga (37) are permanently excluded from future national team selection.
Government authority defended the crackdown, citing a “lack of method and the dispersion of resources” as reasons behind the team’s failure.
Aubameyang Responds
Aubameyang, who missed the final match due to a thigh injury and had already returned to Olympique de Marseille, reacted on social media: “I think the team’s problems are much deeper than the individual I am.”
Potential FIFA Repercussions
While the government frames its actions as an attempt to “restore rigor,” the decision risks serious consequences with FIFA, which prohibits government interference in national football federations.
Should FIFA intervene, Gabon could face a global ban, barring the country’s clubs and officials from international competition and potentially jeopardizing participation in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The future of Gabonese football remains uncertain as the nation seeks to rebuild after one of its most shocking AFCON performances in history.
