Arsenal signed off 2025 in emphatic fashion, dismantling title rivals Aston Villa 4–1 at the Emirates Stadium to ensure they enter the New Year firmly in control of the Premier League title race.
The victory not only ended Villa’s club-record 11-match winning streak but also moved Mikel Arteta’s side five points clear at the summit.
Second-Half Blitz Blows Villa Away
After a cagey first half where both sides traded half-chances, the match exploded into life just three minutes into the second period. Gabriel Magalhães rose highest to bundle home a Bukayo Saka corner, capitalizing on a rare moment of hesitation from former Gunner Emi Martínez.
The Emirates crowd had barely finished celebrating when the lead was doubled only four minutes later; Martin Ødegaard intercepted a pass in midfield and threaded a pinpoint ball to Martin Zubimendi, who clinically poked a first-time finish into the bottom corner.
Arsenal’s dominance continued as Leandro Trossard added a third in the 69th minute, latching onto a loose ball in the box and whistling a crisp strike past the keeper following a lengthy VAR check. The rout was completed by substitute Gabriel Jesus, who made an instant impact by curling a sublime effort into the net just 55 seconds after coming off the bench.
Although Ollie Watkins managed a late stoppage-time consolation for Villa by tapping in a rebound off the post, it did nothing to spoil the party as Arsenal secured their place at the top of the table for the New Year.
The victory underscored the “complete” nature of this Arsenal squad. Despite missing key figures like Declan Rice, the tactical discipline of the midfield—led by the arriving Zubimendi—neutralized Villa’s dangerous counter-attacking threat. Arteta’s side blended patience with a relentless high press, eventually pinning Unai Emery’s side back and turning a tight contest into a one-sided affair.
The Title Race at the Turn of the Year
With this result, Arsenal have consolidated their position as genuine favorites for the crown. Consistency and clinical finishing have become the hallmarks of their campaign, sending a clear message to rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.
What’s Next ?
Arsenal will look to maintain their momentum when they kick off 2026 with a trip to Bournemouth on January 3.
While Arsenal celebrated the New Year at the summit of the Premier League, their traditional rivals endured a frustrating end to 2025. Both Chelsea and Manchester United stumbled in their final fixtures of the year, missing valuable chances to push themselves into the top-four conversation.
Manchester United 1–1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Manchester United’s uneven form under Ruben Amorim continued at Old Trafford as they were held to a 1–1 draw by a disciplined and determined Wolves side.
United edged ahead in the first half, albeit fortuitously, when Joshua Zirkzee’s effort took a heavy deflection off Wolves defender Ladislav Krejčí, completely wrong-footing the goalkeeper and finding its way into the net.
However, the hosts failed to build on the advantage and again looked vulnerable at the back. Wolves grew in confidence as the match progressed and were eventually rewarded late in the second half. Krejčí, eager to atone for his earlier misfortune, played a key role as sustained pressure from the visitors led to the equaliser.
The result was met with frustration from the home crowd, with United booed off at both half-time and full-time. The draw leaves the Red Devils sixth in the table on 30 points as they head into the New Year.
Chelsea 2–2 AFC Bournemouth
It was a chaotic and eventful night at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea’s defensive issues once again came to the fore in a 2–2 draw against Bournemouth.
The Blues were stunned early, conceding in the sixth minute when David Brooks bundled the ball past Robert Sánchez after Chelsea failed to deal with a dangerous cross.
Chelsea responded swiftly. Cole Palmer calmly converted from the penalty spot following a VAR review before Enzo Fernández produced a moment of quality, whipping a superb finish into the top corner to give the hosts a 2–1 lead in the 23rd minute.
But Chelsea’s advantage was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Justin Kluivert capitalised on a scrappy sequence inside the penalty area to restore parity for the visitors.
Despite late pressure and flashes of promise, including a lively display from Estêvão Willian, Chelsea were unable to find a decisive goal. The draw means they have managed just one win in their last seven league outings and finish the year in fifth place, level on points with Manchester United.
