Jofra Archer has been named in England’s squad for the T20 World Cup despite missing the final two Tests of the Ashes series.
The fast bowler is continuing his recovery from a side strain and has been included in a provisional 15-member squad for the tournament, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka in February and March.
Jamie Smith misses out on selection following a difficult Ashes series, while Jordan Cox has also been left out. Pace bowler Josh Tongue, who is yet to play a white-ball international, earns a place after impressing during the Ashes.
World Cup Build-up and Selection Context
England’s early Ashes defeat has put added focus on the upcoming World Cup, which could prove significant for the future direction of the white-ball setup, according to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) squad announcements.
England will play three one-day internationals and three T20 matches in Sri Lanka before the World Cup, beginning their campaign against Nepal in Mumbai on 8 February, as per tournament scheduling released by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Archer’s Fitness and Availability
Archer, 30, is considered England’s leading white-ball fast bowler. He sustained the side strain during the third Test in Adelaide and missed the remainder of the Ashes. England management believes he will be fully fit in time for the World Cup, according to ECB medical updates.
He will not feature in the Sri Lanka bilateral series, with Brydon Carse providing pace cover for that tour.
Squad Balance and Key Inclusions
Captain Harry Brook leads a largely full-strength squad despite the short turnaround from the Ashes. Several players involved in the Test series are expected to feature in the white-ball matches, including Joe Root, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley.
Josh Tongue’s inclusion follows his return of 12 wickets from two Ashes Tests, making him one of England’s standout bowlers in the series, according to match data released by the ECB.
Tournament Format and Group Details
England have been placed in Group C alongside West Indies, Bangladesh, Nepal and Italy. All group matches will be played in Kolkata and Mumbai, according to ICC tournament information.
The top two teams from the group will progress to the Super Eight stage, with potential match-ups against teams such as New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
