Windies Openers Stand Firm After Conway’s Double Hundred for New Zealand

West Indies finished Day 2 of the third Test at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on a positive note, reaching 110 without loss in reply to New Zealand’s massive first-innings total, with openers John Campbell and Brandon King sharing an unbeaten 110-run partnership.

The Windies batters showed good application on a batting-friendly pitch, handling the new ball and overcast conditions well. New Zealand’s bowlers struggled to find rhythm, with Zakary Foulkes, Jacob Duffy, and Michael Rae conceding runs. Ajaz Patel was introduced later but was played comfortably by the set openers.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand dominated with the bat, resuming from their overnight score of 334 for 1 and eventually declaring their first innings at a commanding 575 for 8. The innings was headlined by a superb double century from Devon Conway (227), supported by captain Tom Latham’s 137 and Rachin Ravindra’s 72.

West Indies found early breakthroughs hard to come by despite some movement on a bouncy surface. Nightwatchman Jacob Duffy was dismissed for 17, and Kane Williamson fell just before lunch for 31, caught behind off Justin Greaves. The visitors bowled with more discipline in the second session and picked up a couple of wickets, but New Zealand maintained a strong scoring rate before declaring late in the third session.

With a solid platform in place, West Indies will look to build on their start on Day 3 as they aim to reduce the large deficit of 465 runs.
