Brydon Carse says England can once again challenge Australia with pace in the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, despite a crushing defeat in Perth. England delivered their fastest collective speeds on day one of the first Test, but will be without spearhead Mark Wood for the day-night match on Thursday.
Carse believes the attack can still hit high speeds. “We take a lot of confidence as a group. It’s exciting to be part of a pace attack like that,” he told BBC Sport. “We’ve got bowlers who can change games.”
England bowled Australia out for 132 in the first innings but faded in the second as the hosts chased 205 in just 28.2 overs. Limited rest also hurt the bowlers after England’s batting collapse on day two. Carse, who has 41 Test wickets, said the team must manage recovery better as the series progresses.
Wood is unlikely to play because of knee soreness, meaning Josh Tongue could return if England stay with all-pace. Shoaib Bashir and Will Jacks are spin options.
England have lost five of their seven day-night Tests and have not won at the Gabba since 1986. Carse expects a “hostile” atmosphere but says the team feels no added pressure despite trailing 1-0. He praised travelling fans and said England are determined to level the series.
