Bhubaneswar: On a bright November day, the campus of IIT Bhubaneswar (IIT BBS) witnessed a splash of major excitement as its brand-new, international‐standard swimming pool was officially inaugurated by Director Shreepad Karmalkar, in the presence of Registrar Bamadev Acharya and other senior officials.
The facility has been constructed according to rigorous standards – a minimum depth of 1.8 metres ensures competitive readiness, not just casual dips. Located within the Student Activity Centre at the Argul campus of IIT BBS, this pool marks a significant upgrade in the institute’s sports infrastructure.
What makes this pool stand out? First, it offers students and athletes a high-level training venue right on campus – previously, they might have had to travel off-site for such amenities. Second, it positions IIT Bhubaneswar not just as a hub of technical education, but also as an emerging centre for holistic student development, blending academics, athletics and wellness.
For the swimmers of tomorrow—both beginners and aspiring competitors—the new pool opens doors: intramural meets, inter-institute competitions, cross-training for other sports (including track and field athletes looking for recovery and conditioning options) and an environment that bolsters the institute’s overall sporting culture.
Looking ahead, the question now is: Will this become a launchpad for regional aquatic events in Odisha? Will it inspire students across disciplines to dive deeper into sport? With the infrastructure in place, the possibility is very real.
In short: IIT Bhubaneswar has made a splash—and with this pool, the ripple effects could reach far beyond the water’s edge.
